An article written by Rhydian Williams, exploring the increased activity in North Sea exploration, was published in the August issue of World Oil.
The article examines how licensing changes and other Government initiatives, in conjunction with higher oil and gas prices, are boosting the number of operators and wells drilled in North West Europe.

New licensing round information available in PetroView
UK 23rd Licensing Round layer available in PetroView
This month’s North West Europe and
UK PetroView updates include a layer detailing the
blocks offered for award in the UK 23rd Licensing Round.
The layer includes operator, consortium and equity
information.
In early September, the Energy Minister, Malcolm Wicks, announced that a record 152 licences have been offered to a total of 99 companies under the 23rd Oil and Gas Offshore Licensing Round. 25 of the companies are new entrants to the UK offshore sector. The licences offered are comprised of 70 Traditional licences, 76 Promote licences and six Frontier licences, covering a total of 294 blocks and part-blocks.
Nigerian licensing round
September’s
update for PetroView Sub-Saharan Africa includes all
block awards and partnership information resulting from
Nigeria’s recent licensing round, which proved to be the
most successful ever to take place in the oil industry
globally.
The round raised US$2.81 billion from the tender of 44 blocks. Signature bonuses ranged from US$310 million to US$500,000, with 13 containing the requisite to invest in the downstream sector.
