Bright spots

June 2005

Welcome to the June edition of Bright Spots, our monthly newsletter.

This edition includes:

Exploring the Sahara

In May 2005, The Government of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (‘SADR’) officially announced the commencement of a licensing initiative, enabling international oil and gas companies to participate in the exploration of its offshore territory.

Within the area, widely referred to as Western Sahara, SADR has made a total of 12 blocks available. These blocks can bee seen in our PetroView Sub-Saharan Africa dataset, along with details of all previous exploration, appraisal and stratigraphic test wells (a total of 77 wells) and geological basins.

PetroView Enhancements for North West Europe

This month we have released new data and functionality within the PetroView North West Europe dataset:

What Map module for ArcGIS 9
The WHAT Map module has been developed for the ArcGIS version of PetroView. It will be available to those clients that subscribe to the module and delivered in conjunction with the next quarterly data release from Exploration Geosciences.

Well bottom hole location
This table has been added to the North West Europe dataset and records the bottom hole locations and an assumed path from the top hole location. All data within the table is publicly available.

Wind farms table
We have also added a new wind farms table to the North West Europe dataset. It contains the round one and provisional round two farm sites, as supplied by The Crown Estate in January 2005.

Deloitte's view on reserves

Earlier in the year, Deloitte produced its new accounting and disclosures requirements for oil and gas reserves. This view, which was the first to be produced by any professional services accounting firm, is contained in a paper entitled "Presenting the full picture".

The paper, written by Peter Newman, the Global Head of Deloitte's Oil & Gas practice, has now become required reading for senior executives in a number of the world’s leading oil and gas companies and has received critical acclaim from a number of technical experts.

The full report is freely available on Deloitte’s website.
